Beginning a new year

The lazy hazy days of summer have come and gone once again!  I am always amazed at how quickly we settle into a school year, and this year is no exception at Clarenville Middle School.  With our Curriculum Night now in the rearview mirror, along with the first day of school, it seems almost like we never left.  Classes are full swing, assessments are starting to take place, and our gym is as busy as EVER!  So, in looking ahead this year, I ask myself what do I want to accomplish this year in my classes?

First, I want to continue to explore new technologies that help engage students in their learning.  With the fast paced growth of technology in the 21st Century, educators are tasked with staying on top of the developments and finding creative ways to incorporate these technologies into their teaching methods.  One such case is the increasing popularity of Twitter.  Twitter is opening bold new doors of communication, which I would say has been the most effective tech tool I have incorporated into my professional learning since I began teaching.  This year I hope to see more of my students using their mobile technologies to be creative and to support their learning.

Secondly, I want to continue to learn about good inclusive practices and to build upon my differentiated instructions toolkit.  The same for all is no longer relevant.  We know that each learner is unique.  This year I hope to help my students find out what kind of learner they are, help them find success in English Language Arts through a variety of assessment options, and to help boost their literacy and critical thinking skills.

Finally, I hope to continue on my goal to live a healthy and active lifestyle.  This time of year is particularly busy for teachers.  We're busy getting classes set-up, webpages updated, coaching teams, supervising dances, and planning - where do we find time for things like physical activity?  You won't find the time.  Rather, we must MAKE time for ourselves.  A healthy lifestyle is an important aspect of teaching - healthy body=healthy mind!  Therefore, I am challenging myself to make time for running, cycling, walking my dog, and skiing in the winter.

I am looking forward to a great year!  If these first few weeks are any indication, than I believe it is going to be a GREAT year!

Until Next Time,

Mr. Churchill
